Climbing Mt Kinabalu can be done in 2 days but a more comfortable climb in 3-days are recommended to acclimatise to the altitude and fully enjoy the rich biological diversity - the exotic rare plants, orchids, birds and many more.

While it does not require skills to do the climb, climbers must at least have a basic fitness level. Park regulations require climbers have to engage the services of a registered mountain guide.

The numbers of guides depend on the number of climbers. Porters services are available and recommended. Book and pay for your porter at the Kinabalu Park.

 

 

Full Itinerary

DAY 1 – KOTA KINABALU TO PORING [D]

11:30 AM: Begin your adventure with a pick-up from your hotel/resort in the city. Travel to the Kinabalu National Park, situated 1,500m above sea level on the impressive slopes of Mount Kinabalu. Upon arrival at Kinabalu Park, our guide/coordinator will facilitate all necessary registrations and provide you with an ID tag.

3:00 PM: Depart from Kinabalu Park and proceed to Poring (approximately 45 minutes' drive).

4:00 PM: Arrive at Poring Hot Spring and check into your accommodation for the evening. Enjoy dinner at the Rainforest Restaurant.

Accommodation: Serindit Hostel (or similar)

DAY 2 – PORING TO PARK HQ / TIMP. GATE / ASCEND MOUNT KINABALU / LABAN RATA [B/L/D]

Wake up for breakfast at the Rainforest Restaurant.

7:30 AM: Depart from Poring Hot Spring via KOKTAS, the authorized transportation service by Sabah Parks.

8:30 AM: Anticipated arrival at Kinabalu Park. Meet your mountain guide at the designated point in Park HQ and collect a packed lunch.

9:00 AM: Transfer from Park HQ to Timpohon Gate (Starting point/1,892m) and commence the hike to Laban Rata Resthouse (3,353m). The trek takes approximately 4-6 hours.

2:00 PM: Expected arrival at Laban Rata Resthouse. Check-in and have dinner at Laban Rata Resthouse. Rest and prepare for the summit ascent.

Accommodation: Laban Rata Resthouse (non-heated dormitory beds)

DAY 3 - LOW’S PEAK / DESCEND MOUNT KINABALU / KOTA KINABALU [Supper/B/L]

2:00 AM: Wake up for an early supper and embark on the journey to the summit of Mount Kinabalu. The trek to Low's Peak @ 4,095m will challenge your fitness and determination. Depending on the trekking speed, witness the glorious sunrise over majestic Mt. Kinabalu if weather permits.

7:00 AM: Descend to Laban Rata for a late breakfast and check out. Trek down to Timpohon Gate for transfer back to Kinabalu Park Headquarters. Congratulations on your achievement! Collect your Certificate of Achievement.

Buffet Lunch: Served at the Liwagu restaurant in Kinabalu Park.

Transfer back to Kota Kinabalu City: Approximately 2 hours.

Things You Should Prepare For Mountain Climb:

  • Waterproof backpack to store your items
  • Trekking or running shoe with good grip
  • Warm clothing/Long sleeves shirt/Hiking pants
  • Jacket/Wind breaker
  • Extra clothing and socks
  • Small towel
  • Hand gloves and winter hat
  • Disposable raincoats
  • Head torch
  • Personal toiletries
  • Refillable water bottle (0.5 - 1 Litre)
  • High energy food such as chocolates, nuts, biscuits, sweets, energy bars
  • Your extra luggage can be stored at Kinabalu Park HQ at a nominal fee of MYR 12 per piece prior climb

  • Medication such as headache tablets or altitude sickness tablets
  • Tissue paper / Toilet roll
  • Sun block lotion, lip gloss, plasters
  • Insect repellent / Mosquito Oil
  • Camera with water proof bag

Porters are hired at Park HQ before starting of your climb

Climbers’ backpacks will be weighed by porters in front of climbers.

Payments are to be paid directly to the porter by CASH.

Please carry with you, things that you will require during ascending/descending as your porter will not trek along with you.
